10 Practical Ways to Grow Closer to God
‘Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ‘
James 4:8 ESV
God desires relationship with us. Drawing near to Him comes with the assurance that He will draw near to us. However, we must approach Him in humility and with a pure heart. Here are some practical ways to draw close to Him.
Carve out a specific time to spend with god
Be intentional in spending time each day with the Lord. Ask God if there is a specific time He’d like you to set aside each day or choose a time that you will be able to commit to. Consistency is key.
Sit with god to Listen
During this time, set aside your requests and petitions and just listen. Quiet your thoughts, focus on God and seek to hear what He would say. Imagine being in a relationship where the only time your partner talks to you is when they need something from you. That is how we treat God sometimes.
Spend time in Worship
Sing songs of praise and worship to God. Listen to worship music or better yet, make up your own songs of adoration that comes from your heart.

Keep your thoughts on him throughout the day
Learn how to keep your thoughts on God every moment of the day, not just in prayer or during worship. There is a book titled “Practicing His Presence” by Brother Lawrence and Frank Laubach that has helped me.
Get Rid of Idols
God must take first place in our life. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal to you any idols you have in your life. Anything you give more time to than God is an idol. Anything in your life that you cannot give up is also an idol. Repent for any idols and make God first.
Meditate on scriptures that help build your trust in God
We don’t trust people we don’t know. Find scriptures in the bible that focus on trusting God. Meditate on them so that your faith in Him will grow stronger.
Develop a lifestyle of gratitude
I wrote a post about how our surrender can turn into entitlement if we’re not careful. One of the ways to prevent that is to always give thanks to God for everything. Keep a heart of gratitude towards God.
Spend less time scrolling on social media
Replace the time you’d normally spend on social media doing something that will help you grow spiritually. For example, take a walk and pray or listen to worship music or the bible on audio.
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, Or reflecting the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
We become what we behold. In other words, we become what we give our focus to. Either we will become more worldly or more Godly. The more we keep our gaze on the Lord God, the more we are transformed into His image.
Join a bible study group
Joining a bible study group allows you to study God’s word in a supportive environment and make meaningful connections. You will have a community to hold you accountable and help you stay motivated to be consistent with your walk. .
Serve in Church
God has called us to serve one another. One way we can do this is by serving in church. Serving allows us to use and sharpen the spiritual gifts we’ve been given. This helps us to grow spiritually.
Start small and give yourself grace. God is not looking for perfection, but a heart that is truly seeking to know Him.
