Who Is Your Trust In?
Sometimes life doesn’t go as we planned it. That can happen if we haven’t asked the Lord about his plans for our life before we’ve made our own plans, that probably differ from his. Then, there are the things that happen even when we are following God’s plan. In either case, the Bible tells us that we are to trust the Lord instead of our own limited understanding because human understanding is always subject to error.
‘ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. ‘
Proverbs 3:5-6.
A yielded life means walking in complete obedience to God and trusting his plans for us over our own desires, dreams, goals, and plans. There is nothing wrong with having them, but the question is have we submitted them to God.
Having experienced disappointments in life, sometimes I decided I needed to have a back up plan or help God just in case he didn’t work things out the way I thought it should happen. Essentially I was trusting in my own limited understanding instead of the all-knowing, sovereign God who knows our end from our beginning. I was trying to grant myself the desires of my own heart, but this just leads to more disappointments.
One particular year, I was in a season of asking the Lord to show me my heart. One day as I started praying I specifically asked the Lord to show me the things in my heart that were not like him and that displeased him so that I can repent and have them removed. Right after I finish praying, I sat quietly to listen for the Lord to speak. All of a sudden I heard loudly “I don’t trust you”. At first, I was disheartened and went through a barrage of emotions because I thought it was the Lord telling me he doesn’t trust me. After more time in prayer I realized those words rose up out of my own heart. That was me telling the Lord that I did not trust him. I felt awful.
He was faithful, as he always is, to show me what I asked of him. I had to repent for my disobedience of trusting in myself and begin the work of putting my trust in God. I continually check my heart so that I am able to trust him with my whole life not just pieces and parts that I allow but, with my entire life. I have no doubt he knows what’s best and that he only wants what is best for me. He will always have a better way than we do.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9
Sarah thought God needed help delivering his promise to her and Abraham and look what happened…family rivalry that goes on to this day. If you don’t know the story, you can find it in Genesis 16.
In Proverbs, chapter 3, Solomon credits obedience to and trust in God for longevity, success, guidance, health, reward that exceeds monetary wealth, enjoyment, peace, security, confidence, excellent human relationships, the Lord’s blessing and favor, and honor.
Who is your trust in? Do you trust the Lord wholeheartedly or are there areas in your life that you are withholding from him because of lingering doubt, disappointment, fear, etc? Choose obedience and trust in God. It is a much better life.
